History[]
Meeting Anna[]
Val met Anna at a fashion show around August 2013. They slowly got closer as they attended more shows together. Her lack of interest in Val made him desperate to be her friend. Around the same time, Anna met and started dating Chase Sikorski. Chase had a startup called Wake and used the money coming into that business to pay for everything for Anna. They also stayed with Val for a while, which really meant they stayed with Nora because he stays with Nora.
As Chase and Anna traveled to Ibiza to meet up with Talia Mallay and Henrick Knight, Val went to Paris to do four shows in three days. After they finished in Ibiza, they met up with him in Paris, where they fought. Anna ended up leaving a show with Val. Later, Chase called Val and asked him to check Anna's passport, as he suspected Anna was lying to him. Val decided not to do this, as he had no reason to suspect Anna at that point.
However, when they tried to go back to their hotel room, the hotel manager stopped them as the bill hadn't been paid. Anna said she'd take care of it, but Val started to panic, saying he needed the pills from his bag. He begged her to call Chase, but she didn't want to. When she started to break down and said that her father had cut her off, Val called Chase, who came and paid the bill. While Val retrieved his bag and took one of his pills, he checked Anna's passport, which showed she was born outside Moscow and her real last name was Sorokin.
The next day, when Anna went shopping, Val told Chase what he had learned, but Chase seemingly dismissed it. Less than an hour later, Chase and Anna snubbed Val as they left the hotel, with Anna upset that Val had betrayed her trust by looking in her bag.[1]
When Anna and Chase returned to Manhattan, Val didn't. Anna told Nora he'd gone to Alabama to see his father.
Later, after Nora learned that Anna had stolen money from her, Val brought in a package from Anna. Nora opened it to reveal a taxidermied peacock.[2]
Anna's Arrest and Interview with Vivian[]
When the news came out that Anna had been arrested, Val and his companion, Nora Radford, agreed that they had never met her, as they didn't want to be embarrassed by being associated with her. Despite this, Val spoke with Vivian Kent, who as collecting information to do a story on Anna. He told her that Anna knew how to dress, but she had a basic face, which is how he knew she was really rich, as people with that face can't get away with being poor in their circle. He later spoke to Nora again and denied speaking to Vivian about Anna.[3]
Second Interview[]
Vivian went back to Val and he told her about Anna's relationship with Chase, whom Vivian was not able to find anywhere. During the interview, Val asked Vivian if she knew what happened in Ibiza, because he only knew that when they met up in Paris, everything was different. When he finished telling her what happened in Paris, he asked her what color Anna was wearing at Rikers and seemed satisfied to learn she was wearing gray.[4]
