Donovan Lamb[]
Paul was Vivian's editor and friend and asked her to do an article on things to love about New York, her last piece before moving to her new on-air job. She put together the list, but had a funny feeling about one of the items, a child named Donovan Lamb who had reported making $80 million on the stock market before her was able to drive. She had talked to his friends and family and even seen bank statements, but she was still suspicious, so she told Paul about it. Paul promised he'd look into it, but told her to go ahead and write it up. Later, the article was published exactly as she'd written it, with a flashier title which led to the story getting picked up. Donovan then did an interview with the Post claiming that Vivian had pressured him to lie. When this came out, Vivian went to Landon and told him what had happened and thought Paul would as well, but Paul instead let her take all the blame, which cost her her new job while Paul got promoted.[1]
Vivian's Article[]
Paul assigned Vivian to do an article on #MeToo on Wall Street. She instead wanted to do a story on Anna Delvey, who had recently been arrested for fraud, as she'd pretended to be a German heiress and used her knowledge of the nicest things in life to con people out of thousands of dollars. She pitched this story to Landon and Paul, but Paul said she had to do the #MeToo story, despite her objection to the story.
When Paul learned that, despite his order, Vivian was still doing research for the Anna Delvey story, he called Vivian into a meeting with the editor, Landon Bloom. Vivian said she was against using the women of Wall Street as clickbait, which is all that story would be. Landon had Paul leave so he could talk to Vivian alone. When Paul returned, Landon said that Vivian could have two weeks to work on the Anna story. Once Vivian left, Landon assured Paul that Vivian would go on maternity leave in a few months.[2]
While working on her story, Vivian came to Paul to get authorization to expense a trip to the Hamptons to interview Talia Mallay, who had spent time with Anna. Paul reluctantly approved the expense.[3]
When Vivian's two weeks were up, she showed Paul and Landon what she had. To Paul's dismay, Landon told her to take a few more weeks on it.[4]
American Investigated[]
America Investigated reached out to Paul for a comment from Vivian on a story they were doing on bad journalism. They'd already interviewed Donovan Lamb for this, so he suggested they give Vivian a full interview. When he told her about this, she said she had work to do and walked away. When Paul checked in with her later, she said she had no thoughts on the interview, but agreed to consider it. After considering it, Vivian told Paul she wouldn't do the interview and if he wanted to set the record straight, he could do it himself and explain how he'd thrown her under the bus.[5]
Rachel and Vivian's Articles[]
As Vivian got closer to finishing her article, Paul asked to read a draft. He knew she had to be getting close because her due date was getting closer. Vivian said her baby was due in three weeks and she was working on a draft. He told her they'd need extra time for fact checking. Vivian told him she knew that.
When Vanity Fair released a new issue with a first-person account of the situation with Anna from Rachel DeLoache Williams, Paul came to Vivian to yell about her being scooped. Vivian told Paul and Landon that the VF piece wasn't journalism because Rachel had written it herself, so she wasn't really scooped. The piece lacked the context Vivian was bringing to her own story. Paul wanted to cut their losses, but Landon told her to finish her story and he would decide then. When the article was finished, Paul read it and agreed it was good, but they couldn't go to print unless Vivian got Kacy's consent because legal said they needed her. Vivian was able to get Kacy's consent, on the condition that Vivian removed identifying details.[6]
The article quickly became one of Manhattan Magazine's best performing pieces in five years, exciting both Paul and Landon, who asked Vivian what she wanted to do next.[7]
After Anna's trial concluded, traffic spiked on the article again, leading to over four million global readers. Paul and Landon called Vivian in and asked her to write a follow-up, but she slipped out while they were talking about it.[8]
