Diane Kiesel is the judge who presided over Anna's trial.
History[]
Anna's First Court Appearance[]
When Anna was first arrested, Todd bailed her out of jail. On the day she was supposed to appear in court, she didn't show up, despite Todd's reminders, so Kiesel issued a bench warrant and adjourned court.[1]
Bail Hearing and Plea Agreement[]
At Anna's bail hearing, McCaw argued that Anna be held without bail, because she'd only been arrested when the police hunted her down. Todd said Anna would show up to her hearing and offered to surrender her passport in exchange for a reasonable bail. Kiesel addressed Anna directly, saying she had no faith that Anna would show up if she were granted bail, so she denied it.
When McCaw offered Anna a deal for four years conditional parole with deportation. Anna was set to take it, but when they appeared before Kiesel, Anna rejected the deal, saying she wanted to be heard in court.[2]
Anna's Trial[]
On the first day of Anna's trial, Donna, the bailiff, came in and told Kiesel that Anna wasn't dressed for court because the clothes her stylist sent for her weren't there and she refused to wear the clothes the court provided. Kiesel told Todd she was going to sip her iced coffee and would be very unhappy if Anna wasn't dressed and in court by the time she was finished. When Anna finally appeared in court, the trial began.
On the second day, the wardrobe issue persisted, irritating Kiesel. When Anna came into the courtroom, Kiesel made it clear to Anna that her behavior wasn't acceptable.
On the final day of the trial, after closing arguments, Kiesel instructed the jury then sent them to deliberate. Once the verdict was delivered, she thanked the jury for their service and instructed them on their right to choose to speak to the press about the trial or not.[3]
