Catherine McCaw is the assistant district attorney who prosecuted the case against Anna Sorokin.

History[]

Talking to Rachel[]

McCaw met with Rachel when Rachel realized that Anna was never going to pay back the money she owed.[1]

Rachel became frustrated when McCaw couldn't send someone to LA to arrest Anna, whose social media accounts indicated she was there. McCaw told Rachel that there were millions of outstanding bench warrants in the country and Anna's case was a low priority for her. She also told Rachel that Anna may have stolen money from some banks, but they were keeping it quiet because it could embarrass a lot of powerful people.

Rachel set up a sting for the police in Los Angeles to arrest Anna, after which she was flown back to New York.[2]

Indictment, Interview, and Plea Deal[]

On November 20, 2017, McCaw announced the indictment of Anna Sorokin aka Anna Delvey, who was being charged with multiple fraud-related crimes. At the bail hearing, McCaw asked for Anna to be held without bail because Anna had only been caught because the police hunted her and brought her back to Manhattan from LA.

While McCaw was walking her dog in the park, she ran into Todd Spodek, Anna's lawyer, who was walking with his daughter. McCaw tried to avoid him, but he persisted and tried to talk her into dropping the charges against Anna. McCaw said that the case might be beyond what he could handle and she had seven people on her legal team.

Vivian came to McCaw to try to interview her, but McCaw refused to say anything regarding Anna's case.

McCaw offered Anna a deal to plead guilty in exchange for four years conditional parole with deportation. Anna said she'd accept the deal, but when the time came, she instead said she wanted to be heard in court and refused to deal.[3]

In preparation for the trial, Todd started looking through the discovery, but learned that McCaw had only sent over one box. He went to her and demanded all the discovery. She told him she was obeying the law and would continue to do so, but he demanded everything by the end of the week. She sent a large truck to his office, full of boxes of files.[4]

Vivian's Visit[]

Vivian came to McCaw's office to ask if Nora Radford ever filed a complaint against Anna. McCaw refused to answer and told Vivian to ask Todd. Vivian said that the way her story was shaping up, Chase Sikorski, Anna's ex-boyfriend, looked like the bad guy, so her going to print would make the DA's office look bad for getting the wrong person. McCaw said that she couldn't share anything in the discovery, but could share something that didn't make it because someone changed their mind about pressing charges.[5]

Anna's Trial[]

As Anna's fraud trial started, McCaw was surprised to see Baxter from the DA's office in the audience. She told Lane that he was a proxy for the DA and was there to watch them. When the trial was delayed because Anna refused to get dressed for court, McCaw said the court provided clothes. When the issue was resolved, the trial started.

McCaw questioned her witnesses, who testified about Anna's attempts to get large loans to fund ADF.

During a break in the trial, McCaw and Lane talked about how the Instagram account Neff Davis had set up to show off Anna's trial style had shifted the narrative around Anna. McCaw wasn't worried about that, but was worried about how she'd remember for the rest of her life if she lost even one count.

After all the witnesses had testified, McCaw gave her closing argument and then Todd gave his. Then the jury was sent to deliberate. Once the jury reached a verdict, they returned to the courtroom to hear it. They found her guilty on all but two of the counts. McCaw looked back at Baxter, who was on his phone and then got up and walked out.[6]
