Short Summary[]
Under pressure to finish the Anna article and with her baby's due date imminent, Vivian tries to contact Rachel to hear her side of the Marrakech fiasco.
Full Summary[]
Vivian says that she quit her job, moved, and none of her friends and family will talk. Lou says she has to let Rachel go, but Vivian says she's the only one of Anna's friends named in the complaint. She needs Rachel. Maud comes up and warns them Paul is coming. Barry and Lou both make jokes at Paul's expense. Paul asks how Vivian's story is going. He wants a draft to read. She says she's still in the middle of it. She'll have a draft soon. He says there's an obvious deadline and gestures to her belly and asks when that's happening. She says her baby is due in three weeks. He says they'll need extra time for fact checking. Vivian knows and Lou shoos Paul away. Once he's gone, Maud says they have their own stories and deadlines. They don't have time for Vivian to be telling lies. The baby is actually due in two weeks and her draft isn't even started. Vivian needs Rachel. Lou says people don't just disappear. She has to be on social media somewhere. Vivian has checked everywhere and nothing. Lou says she'll need to build the story without Rachel. She has enough. Barry agrees it's not as good without her. Maud thinks Kacy's part should be enough because she was actually in Morocco. They argue about it until Lou comes over and tells her to start writing and they'll find Rachel.
Vivian puts on her headphones and starts writing. Maud calls her away from her desk.
In another room, Maud tells Vivian she found Rachel. Rachel's not talking because she's sold her story to Vanity Fair.
Rachel gets made up and photographed for her article.
Rachel
Rachel comes home and sits on her couch. She pulls out her phone and calls Anna to ask her to wire the money.
Barry says it doesn't mean her story's dead, but Lou says it doesn't mean it's alive either. Vivian asks who's writing the story, but Maud doesn't know. If it's Nancy Jo Sales or someone like her, Vivian is screwed. She has to go tell Landon, but they stop her. She it's confident that her story can stand on its own. They all agree not to tell Landon or Paul. They want to see the piece first to know what she's up against. It'll be out today.
Rachel goes to work. A receptionist likes her tan and two other co-workers are jealous and ask for details. Rachel brushes them all off. Then she runs into Noah, who's there for a meeting. He asks how she is and she tells him about her card being charged. She's still confident Anna will fix it. He asks her to grab dinner sometime, but she says she can't and they part ways.
Rachel sits down at her desk and texts Anna again, asking for the payment. Anna says it was a bank screwup and she'll have the payment tomorrow. Clara comes to get Rachel.
Vivian stares at the Vanity Fair homepage. She refreshes when Barry says it's up. Vivian quickly realizes Rachel wrote the article herself, which is good for them. Paul comes in, yelling about her being scooped.
Clara puts a photograph up on the wall and admires it. Rachel continues to try to get the money from Anna, but just gets excuses and lies. It starts to affect Rachel's performance at work. Three months later, Rachel still hasn't gotten the money. She's used up all her money making the minimum payments.
Vivian tells Paul and Landon the Vanity Fair piece isn't journalism because Rachel wrote it herself. She doesn't believe they got scooped. There's nothing but Rachel complaining about her friend. The piece lacks content, but Vivian's won't. Paul thinks they should just cut their losses. Vivian and Paul both appeal to Landon, who tells Vivian to finish the story and he'll decide then.
Noah and Rachel share some wine at Rachel's place and talk about their lives. Noah's shocked to learn that Anna hasn't paid Rachel back. She's not sure how much longer she can hide it from work. She doesn't even know where Anna is. Noah can't believe she still considers Anna a friend after what Anna put her through. Rachel defends her again and says it'll all be fine.
The receptionist drops something off at Rachel's desk and notices she's tired. Rachel gets a notification that she received a payment from Anna. She's excited until she sees it's only $5000. She calls Anna, but gets no answer. Linda comes up to Rachel's desk. She sent Rachel an email last week and asks if Rachel got it. She got a message from AmEx about an unpaid balance on Rachel's work card. She warns Rachel that Marco is doing his quarterly checks next week, so she needs to get it paid before then. Rachel says she'll take care of it. Rachel frantically calls Anna again, leaving a message asking for the rest of the money.
Barry, Lou, and Maud are trying to figure out where Anna stayed during this time. She was at the Beekman, but when they realized she couldn't pay, and then she moved to the W. Vivian gets up suddenly, confusing them.
Outside the office, Vivian calls her doctor's office and asks them to have Dr. Harris meet her at the hospital.
Rachel cries in the bathroom at work. Linda overhears this and asks if there's something Rachel wants to tell her.
After Rachel has told Linda, Linda tells her to talk to Marco. He's going to see it himself anyway, so it's better if she just tells him. Then legal can get involved. Rachel still insists a check is coming, but Linda knows it's not. Linda says it's fraud. She has to turn Anna in. Rachel says Anna's her friend and she won't turn a foreign woman over to the police in Trump's America. Rachel thinks Anna will figure it all out and be stronger for it.
Jack gets to the hospital and asks what's happening. Vivian tries to say it's nothing, but Dr. Harris says the baby's head is engaged. She'll go into labor in the next two to three days. She needs to take it easy. Vivian promises to take care of herself.
Rachel stands in the stairwell and calls Anna. She's shocked when Anna answers. Anna offers to get a cashier's check for Rachel and she can pick it up at the W. Rachel celebrates after hanging up.
Rachel talks to Jack about the intervention mentioned in Rachel's article. No one mentioned it to her. Vivian thinks she still has time. She wants to go back to work because her story isn't done. She's close, but she needs to talk to Kacy. Jack reminds her of all the things they need to do before the baby comes. Anna says people have babies every day. They're not special. They'll do what it takes to be ready when she's there. She has to finish the story first. He asks if she can do it in two days. She says she has to. It's now or never.
Rachel goes to Anna's room at the W, but gets no answer. Adrienne Stanley comes to Rachel and says Anna isn't staying with them anymore. Rachel says Anna left a check for her and she has to get it. Rachel then realizes Anna lied and didn't pay the W. Rachel starts to cry. She doesn't know what to do. She's just a normal person and Anna's rich. Adrienne says it doesn't look like she is.
Maud says that while Rachel was there, Anna was in jail because the W called the cops on her for non-payment. They have the paperwork from her arrest. That's when she first met Todd.
Todd says he got Anna out on bail, but her case isn't over. As Brian puts stickers on her, Anna says this would never have happened in Europe where she's better known. Todd asks why she didn't pay. Anna says she tried, but her cards weren't working. She can't believe she was handcuffed and thinks there's no way they put Alec Baldwin in handcuffs when Todd was representing him. Todd says he actually represented Alec Baldwin's stalker. Todd gives Anna a form to sign, permitting him to put a lien on her assets if there's another financial mishap down the line. Then he works on her case. Anna signs and says she's still having trouble with her cards, so she'll have to stay with him. He says no.
Todd and Vivian talk on the phone. Todd says the story makes Anna look bad. It has a bunch of things they didn't know about. He hasn't talked to Anna about it yet.
Vivian goes back to Kacy and asks her about the intervention.
Kacy says Rachel was a mess about the whole thing. Kacy decided they needed to confront Anna. She wanted to fix things. She asks Anna to meet her for drinks and that Nicole would bring her. Kacy says it was a mistake to get her client involved, but she was there when Rachel arrived in tears.
Kacy coaches Nicole through a workout. Rachel comes in crying. Kacy realizes it was because of Anna.
Kacy tells Rachel not to let Anna take any more from her. She has to claim her power back and put herself first. Nicole is picking Anna up right now. Kacy says Rachel is brave and she's going to face Anna. Kacy hypes her up as they walk inside.
Nicole leads Anna in. Anna's surprised that Rachel is there and asks what this is.
Anna says they're wasting her time. Rachel says she needs the next of the money. Kacy wants Anna to tell them the truth. Anna insists that the money is coming and says Rachel's being dramatic. Kacy asks if they need her to call someone or what. Anna says she told them it would be taken care of. Nicole then steps in, saying she knows a million girls like Anna. She's a liar. She tells Anna just to give her the money she owes. Anna says she has so much on her mind as she's building ADF. She's leasing a whole building. They know she's not because it's already been leased. They show her the proof. Anna says it's fake. She yells at them and says she doesn't have time to waste on them anymore. She thought they were her friends. They beg her just to tell the truth. Anna excuses herself to the bathroom. Kacy thinks they're getting through to her, but Nicole says she's running. They watch as she leaves in a cab.
Kacy wanted to find Anna's parents online and contact them, but Rachel said she wanted to think about it. Then Kacy read Rachel's article. Kacy says all the girls are toxic and she wants out of the narrative. She doesn't want to be in the article. Vivian panics and says she needs Kacy's story. Kacy's done with Anna and her chaos. Vivian begs her to think about it.
Vivian continues writing her article. Maud tells her others are asking for their parts of her story to be taken out. Vivian refuses, but Maud says they'll have to see what legal says. Everyone is spooked by Rachel's article. Neff comes in and says Rachel's making it sound like she's the victim and asks what Vivian's going to do about it. Vivian's going to write her article. That's what she's doing. The facts speak for themselves. Neff notices Vivian is sitting on a towel, which Vivian tells her is for in case her water breaks. Neff wonders if Anna has seen the article.
A guard tosses Anna a copy of Vanity Fair. As soon as she sees the article, she starts screaming that she needs to make a call.
Rachel is in line at a police precinct. She gets a text from Linda asking where she is an telling her she needs to tell Marco. Rachel steps up to the desk and says she needs to report a crime. She explains what happened with Anna, but the desk sergeant and detective don't take her seriously, saying she wasn't coerced and she received the services. She doesn't know what to do. The detective suggests she start a GoFundMe and find better friends.
While Neff waits nearby, Maud, Lou, and Barry review the timeline while Vivian continues writing. They wonder where Anna went during this time and where Rachel went after trying to report Anna.
Rachel tells Linda and Marco she wasn't trying to defraud the company. Marco says she shows a lack of judgment. She asks if he's firing her. He says if the investigation finds that she was in on it, they'll be calling the police. She stayed at the hotel, so she used the services charged to her company card.
Anna watches people dining at a restaurant. She goes to the park, where she calls Alan and then Gabriel. Her phone dies.
Anna goes to a hotel, where the manager stops her and says the desk attendant can't let her check in. They know who she is. She says it's cold outside, but he says there, rooms start at 800. For her, she has to pay upfront. Anna leaves.
Vivian is still writing when Neff gets up to leave. Before she goes, Jack asks her about being friends with Anna. He wonders why Anna didn't just pay if she's rich. Neff says Anna's real, but her dad cut her off. Things will work out and the money will be back. She leaves.
Anna boards the subway. She sees a back of food from Shake Shack on a nearby seat, so she grabs it and starts eating.
Noah and Rachel have dinner together and Rachel talks about Anna and how it's affected her life. She feels like an idiot for letting this happen. She asks Noah if this was her fault. He says she was being a good friend. Rachel says this wouldn't happen to Anna because Anna puts herself first. She suddenly says if Anna wants drama, she'll get it.
Vivian is working when Lou hands her a piece of paper. She takes it and gets right back to work. Maud tells Barry Vivian's been working for twelve hours, which he respects. He thinks she's taking it a little far, though. She made one mistake, though it was a big one. He thinks she should have been more on top of it. Maud says it was a list and the kid lied to her. He's messed up before and didn't lose jobs or respect over it.
The HR representative tells Rachel she has to return all company IDs until the investigation is complete. She's being suspended. Rachel says she can't lose her job. Rachel then says she's entitled to a lawyer and they failed to report her that she was entitled to an independent representative for their meeting.
Linda follows Rachel as she leaves the meeting and Rachel says she's standing up for herself.
Vivian continues writing. She tells Lou that she has 7000 words and 5000 of them are good and her towel is still dry.
Anna puts on lipstick in a public bathroom, then puts her coat back on and leaves.
Everyone at Manhattan Magazine reads Vivian's article. Vivian knows it's good. Paul doesn't disagree, but legal says they need Kacy. Vivian says she'll call her, but she stands up and her water breaks.
Anna checks her bank accounts and finds she's overdrawn everywhere. She pulls out her ADF check book. She takes a call from Todd and tells him she's leaving for the courthouse now. He tells her to be on time and she says she will be.
Vivian has a contraction as she calls Kacy. When Kacy answers, she says it's bad karma. She begs Kacy to let her tell her story. Kacy doesn't want her name in it and Vivian agrees to pull it as well as anything else that identifies her. Kacy agrees. Once she hangs up, Jack leads her out of the office as everyone applauds.
Todd checks his watch in the courtroom. Judge Kiesel isn't happy. The door opens, but it's just Alexi.
Dr. Harris checks on Vivian, who curses at her.
Todd says something must have delayed Anna. Kiesel issues a bench warrant and adjourns the case.
At Signature Bank, a teller takes Anna's check, which she's written to herself for $15,000. She then goes to another Signature Bank and withdraws the money in cash. She exits the bank with the cash.
A nurse tells Dr. Harris that they're at ten centimeters and Vivian's blood pressure is a little low. Baby's developing late decels. Dr. Harris says they need to get the baby out now. Vivian's tired, but she has to push. Jack encourages her as she pushes. Vivian says she's done, but Dr. Harris says she has to push or she has to go to the OR. Jack tells her she's losing and she doesn't lose. She wins. She's not special. People squat in fields. She sits up and pushes until the baby is out.
